Mute the Cute Newt

So what you at Mr Henry? Why thank you for asking blogger :) Well I just wanna model shit and so I have been. I wanted to try some character work since FMP, in a number of ways. First I just started with a sphere and tried to make it into something human, using a celeb as reference. Of course there is plenty wrong with it but what would i need practice for if I was already perfect.

Also I need to do cute stuff and here's a hamster....yip. Gotta unwrap and texture it still :D

Also tried my hand at a different bust, this is kimarhi from FFX but my version I guess. This tests many things and again lots wrong but LEARNING.

And the best of the whole thing is I've been inspired by Aymen's stuff and I've had this little thing in my mind for a while. This is Mute, Mute is a newt, he cannot talk but he's great at rolling and jumping. I hope to getting him all rigged and slithering along a cute environment.

LOVE ME

I've also started work on this fella cause hes fucking cool, I only have a base mesh at the minute so nothing exciting to show. But the main thing here to note is I'm trying to burst out all this energy, but i need to start and focus on one project at a time. That is a problem with me, I like to flit back and forth so for now I'm going to pick one and then finish it. I have something to show then instead of a hundred WIP's, anywho that is all bros :)

CanJam2013

Last weekend I went to a 24 hour game jam event in Lincoln University. I worked with three programmers to attempt to produce a game in that period of time. We were given the tile of Uranium Madness and so based a game on elements and a capture the node based system. I, of course was in charge of the art and below is the stuff I worked on over the period of time.

 Normal Unit

 Heavy Unit

Fast Unit

 You can see my work ranged from Hud to in-game sprites. I made everything in 3DsMax and unwrapped, textured then rendered out the images. This is a longer way to do things rather than just drawing them but I wanted the hand painted practice. It was an awesome day to get out and understand how programmers work but it was very hard, trying to work for 24 hours is not an easy task. Unfortunately we weren't able to get a game together due to the code crashing but I still had fun and I learned a lot from the experience.

Speed Modelling & Texturing

So I've entered the Lincoln Game Jam, it takes place on Saturday and will involve making a small game in a 24 hour period. I decided I would give myself an hour challenge and see how I get on. I started with getting an idea through generators.

Ivy Sparrow is what I got, I recorded my timings below;

Started = 16:39
Finished researcg &concepting = 16: 47                    8 minutes
Finished Model = 17:06                                           19 minutes
Finish Unwrapping = 17:13                                        7 minutes
Finish Diffuse = 17:47                                               34 minutes

So I didn't do a normal or a specular, that's a bit much to ask in that time But you can see the model below, I hope to do this again in the week, try and quicken myself up for a long night of modelling on Saturday, but it was a fun exercise. On later thought minus the ivy up the bird and alpha it on the stick.

Life Art - Level 3rd Year

Alright I realised I haven't updated my life art on my blog for a while. I have been trying to still attend these sessions as I recall last year the appalling amount of people that attended. I enjoy life art, it is something that was so daunting but now I love to just sit there and draw my own thing. Over the period of the three years I have been changing my style and now I have found one which I enjoy doing. I'm not one for charcoal or fanatic about paints, I like me an my little mechanical sketching away into fairy land.

Texturing Updates

 Updates just before bed, the diffuse is almost there, most of tomorrow will prob be trying to get rid of seams and stretching errors and I'll also do a specular tomorrow. I'm not too tired at the minute and so I might try and refresh my memory on how to rig.

Ammendments

Okay so after receiving some constructive critique from Mikey & Chris about the stylized proportions of the character I spend the morning tweaking the mesh to make it more realistic. I see where they are coming from in terms of i need to be consistent with the style to make it work. I love TF2 below are some of their characters and you see they are stylizes the same but in different wants. they all have tapering feet, their arms and forearms are larger, the skeleton is more torso heavy for the most part of them. But they still look in proportion to themselves.

Right so I got some reference pictures up and started to amend the mesh a bit, i put the flat diffuse on as well so it's easier to tell what part is what. I shortened the whole character, areas like the legs and boot were too long. The arms obviously were too big so i decreased them. The average is 7 and a half heads tall, i made her 8 because she was becoming stumpy and it seems to work okay. The previous model was 8 and a half, I put the hand to the face to check the proportions were correct then placed them back on.

But as i stated in the red I though the shoulders were too square so i lowered them a bit and i still wasn't happy with the hands. So i did more adjustments, making legs smaller again, i widened the waist...etc.So any crit would be good at this time to see if the proportions are better :) in the meantime I will finish the texturing.

I also went an browsed some websites for women of similar shape to the aviator concept. Its a thing i forgot to mention that I'm not doing an 80 year old aviator because I'm trying to follow the concept who is a young female. Anywho images belows;

I also looked at bigger curvier women in case I wanted to go that way with the model. Its something I might do at the end is make her more curvy just for fun, I think it would add more character but at the same time the concept is thin but it can be like a different version :)
